Handa collection, 1950-2002. circa 1950-2002.

This large and historically significant collection, accumulated by Australian collector Peter Burgis over a 50-year period, was acquired in 2002 by the University of Western Australia through the generosity of Japanese philanthropist and arts patron Dr Haruhisa Handa. The collection focuses on the work of Australian musicians and composers in various musical fields during the past 100 years and encompasses classical and popular music as well as musical theatre. In addition the collection includes Australian radio shows and advertisements, recitations and oral history. The collection contains over 150,000 individual items with more than 90,000 sound carriers and around 70,000 print documents. The sound recordings (1890s to 2002) include cylinders, 78s, LPs, tapes and CDs, whilst the print material includes photographs, concert programmes and sheet music. Some of the collection has been catalogued, and a selection of sound recordings digitised.

Peter Wykes Burgis is a researcher into the history of the Australian recorded sound industry. He was involved, as a consultant, in the development of the National Collection of Sound Recordings, created in 1973 by the National Library of Australia, Canberra. He was then appointed Sound Archivist at the NLA in 1973, working there at least until 2001.
